My fellowship application was partially based on samples that I had already collected in Jordan during my CBRL fellowships (Council for British Research in the Levant) when I was based at the British institute in Amman (BIA) https://cbrl.ac.uk/. So straight away I was able to start in the laboratory processing archaeological sediment samples. Particularly I started analysing the sediments using the portable x-ray florescence analyser which measures the presence and level of geochemical elements. This is a non-destructive method of analysis which I always conduct prior to the extraction of the micro plant remains (silica phytoliths), which involves the destruction of the sediment samples to extract these remains (more to come on this in the summer).
